Chapter 17
[September]
Justin opened the door, was surprised to see Amisha Raman standing on his front porch. Absolutely beautiful. Dark, exotic, stately. If I was 40 years younger… He interrupted himself, laughed quietly. She still wouldn’t have anything to do with me!
He covered his mouth to hide his smile, escorted Amisha into the foyer. “Hello, Amisha, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?” He hoped he didn’t sound too sappy. But she was probably used to men making fools of themselves around her.
She flashed him a perfect smile, but couldn’t hide from him the sadness in her eyes. “If it’s not too much trouble, I would appreciate a few minutes of your time.”
“No trouble at all. Come on in.” He escorted her to the kitchen table. She even smelled good—just the right combination of floral and musk. “I’ll make us some tea. Now, what can I do for you?”
“I’ve come to petition you for a favor, Justin. We are trying to obtain a bank loan on our home, but the lawsuit by Griffin is preventing us from doing so. I believe the correct term is that there exists a ‘cloud on the title.’”
Justin nodded. “Yes. No bank would want a mortgage on a property that already had an attachment on it.”
“My problem is that we need the money from the mortgage to pay the IRS. Since Mr. Griffin is now dead, is there any reason his attachment cannot be removed?”
Good question. “Well, you’ve come to the right place. As executor of his estate, I’m the one who can make that decision. Unfortunately, my hands are tied right now because things are still being processed in the Probate Court. I can’t do anything now, but in a few months I’d be happy to help you. We both know, after all, that his claim against you is bogus.”
Amisha looked down at her hands, turned her face away from Justin. “A few months will be too late.” Her voice was soft, almost a whisper. She turned toward him with large, wet eyes. “Justin, please, is there any way you can help me? This is more than a simple matter of money. Please?”
He had known women who had used their beauty to manipulate men, who had played the damsel in distress to their advantage. But this was different. There was no melodrama, no artfulness in her plea. She was scared. Of something.
He sighed. He was 73 years old—the worst that could happen to him was that he would be sanctioned by the court, maybe even disbarred. But so what? He was planning on retiring anyway. And, let’s face it, he had recently done things far worse than releasing a property from a bogus lawsuit. These people had been victimized by Griffin long enough. Maybe it was time for a little justice in a world full of laws. “Very well, my dear. I will prepare the necessary paperwork.”
She offered him a half smile, then a full hug. “Thank you. Thank you so much.”
“Well, don’t mention it.
